Men's Soccer Ranks Sixth in Soccer America Preseason Poll

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teamwas ranked sixth in the 1999 Soccer America Men’s Preseason Collegiate Top20 poll, and UVa midfielder Ryan Trout (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) was namedPreseason All-American (Second Team) by the editorial staff at SoccerAmerica.
Indiana, the defending national champions, gathered the top spot inthe preseason Top 20 poll. The Hoosiers (23-2 in ’98) were followed byMaryland (16-8), UCLA (17-4), Clemson (22-2) and Stanford (18-5-2).Virginia fell in at number six, giving the Atlantic Coast Conference threeschools ranked in the top six positions in the poll. The Cavaliers arecoming off the heels of a 16-4-3 season in which they finished 4-1-1 inconference play. SMU (15-5-1) was ranked seventh, followed by Brown(13-3-2), St. John’s (16-5-3) and Connecticut (17-4) to round out the topten teams in the poll.
Virginia was also ranked sixth in the Nation Soccer CoachesAssociation of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll, which ranked Indiana first,followed by Stanford, Maryland, Clemson and Santa Clara in the top five.
Trout started all 23 games for UVa last season and finished theyear second in scoring on the team with 23 points. He recorded six goalsand nine assists on the season, including two game-winning goals and fourgame-winning assists. During his two-year career at Virginia, Trout hasposted 40 points after registering 22 assists and nine goals.
Trout and the sixth ranked Cavaliers will prepare for the upcoming’99 season by participating in the Fila Preseason Kick-off in College Park,Md. on August 27-28. The games are being hosted by the University ofMaryland. UVa will play exhibition games against Rutgers on Friday, August27 before battling Connecticut on Saturday, August 28. Both contests arescheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
Following its competition in College Park, Virginia will return toCharlottesville to host the 1999 Coca-Cola Classic Tournament on September3-5. UVa will join American, Gonzaga and Seton Hall in the four-teamtournament. The Cavaliers will play Seton Hall on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7:30p.m. and will face Gonzaga on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 2:30 p.m.
