No. 6 Virginia and Rutgers Play to a 1-1 Tie

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The University of Virginia men’s soccer teambegan the exhibition portion of its 1999 schedule by competing in theMaryland/Fila Preseason Kickoff Classic at Ludwig Field. The No. 6 rankedCavaliers squared-off against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the first gameof the tournament. The contest resulted in a 1-1 tie. In accordance withpreseason tournament rules, overtime was not played. The game was anexhibition for both squads and does not count on the regular season recordfor either team.

Virginia jumped on the scoreboard first just 1:12 into the contest.Midfielder Drew O’Donnell (Newton Square, Pa./Haverford) intercepted adeflected clearing attempt and redirected the ball into an open net to putthe Cavaliers ahead 1-0. Rutgers goalkeeper Jon Conway left the netunprotected in an attempt to regain possession of the loose ball whichresulted in the UVa goal.

After trailing 1-0 for nearly 69 minutes, the Scarlet Knights tiedthe game at 1-1 when Dustin Sheppard scored on a feed from teammate GuyAbrahamson at the 70:03 mark of the contest. Abrahamson gathered a looseball at midfield and dribbled through several Cavalier defenders beforedishing the assist to Sheppard. Sheppard’s shot was taken from about 15yards away and sailed over the head of Virginia goalkeeper Kyle Singer(Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) to knot the score at 1-1.

Rutgers held a slight 11-10 edge in shot over Virginia and posted a9-3 edge in corner kicks. UVa’s Singer gathered seven saves while theScarlet Knights’ Conway recorded three saves.

Virginia will return to action on Saturday, Aug. 28 when theCavaliers face the No. 10 ranked Connecticut Huskies on the second day ofthe Maryland/Fila Preseason Kickoff Classic. The game is scheduled tobegin at 5:00 p.m. and will be played at Ludwig Field.
