CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia sophomore Darci Borski(Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) scored the opening two goals of thecontest just 5:25 apart in the first half to help the Cavaliers defeatin-state rival Virginia Commonwealth 8-0 today in a preseason scrimmage atKlockner Stadium. Fifth-year Jill Maxwell (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) assistedand then scored six minutes later to add to the offensive punch of theCavaliers. The Virginia defense did not allow the Rams a shot during thecontest.

Virginia got on the board five times in the first half, including apair of goals 40 seconds apart to pull away from the Rams. After Borksiscored twice, with the first assist coming from Angela Hucles (VirginiaBeach, VA/Norfolk Academy), Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, IN/Pike) fed KatieTracy (Richmond, VA/James River) to put UVA up 3-0. Forty seconds laterMaxwell scored off an assist from Laura Gaworecki (Houston, TX/CypressCreek) to stake Virginia to a 4-0 lead. Maxwell then assisted on the lastgoal of the half as she fed first-year Aly Benitez (Lake Mary, FL/LakeMary) in the 26th minute to give the Hoos a 5-0 lead at the half.

Gaworecki and Hucles scored 36 seconds apart in the second half topush the margin to 7-0 just six minutes into the second stanza. Gaworeckihit a bouncer from five yards out in the 51st minute and then Hucles beatthe keeper from 15 yards. Maxwell then closed out the scoring in the finalminute of play.

Ashley Mowery (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) started in goal andplayed the entire 90 minutes but did not face a shot.

Virginia will open up the 1999 season on the road as they take onthe Beavers of Oregon State on Friday, September 3 at 8:00 EST. TheCavaliers will then face #3 Portland on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 5:15 EST.Virginia will open at home on Sunday, Sept. 12 as they take on Fresno Stateat 1:00 pm.
