COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teamcompleted the exhibition portion of its 1999 schedule by competing in gamethree of the Maryland/Fila Preseason Kickoff Classic at Ludwig Field. TheCavaliers (ranked sixth by Soccer America and sixth by the NSCAA)squared-off against the Connecticut Huskies (ranked 10th by Soccer Americaand 16th by the NSCAA) in the third game of the tournament. The contestresulted in a 1-1 tie. In accordance with preseason tournament rules,overtime was not played.

The game was an exhibition for both squads and does not count onthe regular season record for either team. Both UVa and UCONN finish thetournament with a 0-0-2 record. Virginia tied Rutgers 1-1 and Connecticuttied Maryland 0-0 in Friday’s contests.

The Huskies scored the first goal of the game at the 16:06 markwhen Meurys Cajas collected a pass from teammate Luis Arauz and scored pastCavalier goalkeeper Kyle Singer (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale) to make it1-0 UCONN. But Virginia would answer right back at the 20:59 mark whenKyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) found Ryan Trout (Media, Pa./StrathHaven) just inside the box as he beat Connecticut goalkeeper MattChavlovich to knot the game at 1-1.

Virginia will return to regular season action on Friday, Sept. 3when the Cavaliers host the 1999 Coca-Cola Classic Tournament at KlocknerStadium. America and Gonzaga will kick things off as they compete in thefirst game of the tournament at 5:00 p.m. before UVa and Seton Hall squareoff at 7:30 p.m in game two. Tournament play will resume on Sunday, Sept.5 when American and Seton Hall play at noon, followed by Virginia andGonzaga at 2:30 p.m.
