STATE COLLEGE, Pa.–The Cavaliers took the lead in the game in thefourth minute, but the Nittany Lions scored four unanswered goals,including three in the first half, to come back to defeat Virginia 4-1.

Virginia’s Jill Maxwell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) took a pass fromAshley Meeker (Zanoni, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) and send a hard shot tothe upper right corner in the net to give the Hoos the early lead. It wasMaxwell’s eighth goal on the season, which ties her for the team lead.

But the Lions roared back with two goals in the next eight minutesfrom the foot of Christie Welsh. In the eighth minute she took a throughpass from Kelly Convey to the cage to tie the game. Four minutes laterShari Pickett flicked the ball to Bonnie Young who deflected the ball toWelsh who put the ball in the net to give Penn State the lead they wouldnot relinquish.

Penn State went ahead 3-1 as Welsh completed her hat trick with aheader off a direct kick from Megan Mills.

Welsh also assisted on the only goal of the second half which camein the 50th minute. Bonnie Young collected a cross from Welsh and stuck itin the cage.

The Cavaliers return home for the final game of the regular seasonon Sunday, Oct. 31. Virginia will play the Tennessee Lady Volunteers at1:00 pm.
