WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Cavalier senior captain Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) stuck in a ball with nine minutes to play in the first half to give Virginia the lead they would not relinquish as the Hoos shut out the Duke Blue Devils 2-0 in this afternoon’s first round match at the ACC Championships. It was Elwell’s 14th career game-winning goal.

After a tight first half played between the 25s, Elwell stuck in a scramble in front of the cage with 8:59 in the first half. The Cavalier defense held strong, allowing only one shot, which came on a penalty corner and was saved by keeper Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton).

In the second half, Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) hit the sideboard of the goal five minutes into the half on a penalty corner to give Virginia a 2-0 lead. Both captain Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) and sophomore Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) were credited with assists on the play. Goodloe’s assist was her 19th on the season, which ties the UVA record for assists as a sophomore, held by teammate Laura Lindsay (1997).

Coleman was assessed a yellow card at the 26:39 mark of the second half and the Blue Devils were able to force six corners in that time, but each of them was turned away thanks to Worthington and Julia Richardson’s (Atlanta, Ga./Stone Ridge (MD)) two defensive saves. The Cavaliers went through the penalty time unscathed and the defense held on for the win 2-0.

Worthington made eight saves on the afternoon, including seven in the second half.

Virginia advances to play top-ranked Maryland tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 pm.
