CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia senior Jill Maxwell (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) scored her career-high 10th goal of the season off a header from a free kick by Ashley Meeker (Zanoni, Va./Hampton Roads Academy), but it was not enough as the Cavaliers fell to the fourth-seeded Clemson Tigers 3-1 tonight in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

Clemson struck first in the first half as Beth Keller took a pass from Alison Burpee and dribbled a third of the field to beat Cavalier ‘keeper Julie Harris (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) in the 34th minute of play. Clemson led at halftime 1-0.

Keller assisted on the next goal in the 71st minute of play as her cross went to the right post and Tricia Williams pounced on it to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Virginia struck back five minutes later as Meeker’s free kick was headed into the cage by Maxwell to break up the shutout and pull the Cavaliers within one. It is the second consecutive game that Meeker has fed Maxwell for a goal.

But as the Cavaliers pressed for the tying goal, Clemson got a breakaway and Deliah Arrington’s shot hit the post where Burpee ran onto it and deposited it in the empty net with less than five minutes in regulation.

Virginia, now 12-8, awaits a bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 10:00 pm.
