CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer teamlooked to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive with a very importantcontest against the Ohio State Buckeyes. UVa entered its game with OSUhaving lost five of its last eight contest. However, the Cavaliers gotback to their winning ways tonight with a 1-0 victory over the Buckeyes infront of 2,720 spectators at Klockner Stadium.

After playing through a scoreless first half of play, both teamsturned up the offensive attack in the second period. Then, Virginia’s doorof opportunity opened when Kyle Martino (Westport, Conn./Staples) beat hisdefender into the box and sent a cross from the right side of the goal thatconnected with teammate Sheldon Barnes (Miramar, Fla./St. thomas Aquinas)for the game-winning score at 73:15. Barnes’ goal was the lone goal of thecontest and was his second game-winning goal this season, the fourth one ofhis career. The UVa defense held the Buckeyes in check for the remainderof the game to preserve its fifth shutout win of the season. Cavaliergoalkeeper David Comfort (Richmond, Va./Monacan) gathered his first careershutout in goal en route to four saves on the evening.

With the victory, Virginia improves to 10-7-1 overall, while theloss drops Ohio State’s record to 11-7-0 on the year. The Cavaliersimprove to 3-0-0 all-time against Ohio State.

UVa will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the 1999Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament. The tournament will beheld at Spry Soccer Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University.Competition in the tournament will begin on Thursday, November 11 and willcontinue through Sunday, November 14. UVa’s first round opponent in thetournament is yet to be determined.
