Blue Squad Defeats Orange Team, 25-8

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling teamtook one step closer to the beginning of its 1999-2000 regular season withan intrasquad exhibition meet. The Cavaliers had 16 members of the teamcompete in the Blue-Orange Exhibition which was held at Memorial Gymnasium.The Blue squad came away with a 25-8 victory over the Orange team in UVa’spreseason tune-up.

The Blue team jumped out to an early 7-0 lead following TobyMacDonald’s (Venice, Fla./Venice) 3-2 decision over Dave Takseraas(Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Jason Bernd’s (Virginia Beach, Va./FirstColonial) 15-4 major decision over Matt Viola (Chesapeake, Va./WesternBranch) at 133. However, the Orange squad won 141 and 149 when P.J. Bory(Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) posted a 6-3 decision over Joey Legg (Glocester,Va./Gloucester) and John Pozniak (State College, Pa./State College) tallieda 17-1 major decision over Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) to putthe Orange squad ahead for its only lead at 8-7. From that points on itwas all Blue, as the Blue squad won 157, 174, 184 and HWT.

Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) recorded a 4-3decision over John Christopher (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) at 157before the the Blue team posted back-to-back pins at 174 and 184. StephenMazzola (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) pinned Robbie Moutoux (Vienna,Va./George Marshall) at 174 and Ryan McGrath (Blairstown, N.J./BlairAcademy) pinned Marshall Hurley (Augusta, Ga./Lakeside) at 184 to extendthe Blue lead to 22-8. Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) defeatedRyan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) 3-1 in the HWT match to make it a25-8 Blue victory.

There were two matches held at 133 and there was not a match at 165in the exhibition.

The Cavaliers will now prepare to compete in their first regularseason competition. Virginia will travel to Lexington, Va. to compete inthe Keydet Invitational on Saturday, November 13. The competition isscheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m.
