CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of Virginia men’s tennis players JohnWinter (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and Tommy Croker (Alexandria,Va./St. Stephens) teamed to defeat Duke’s Marco Cerenko and Ted Rueger 7-5,2-6, 6-3 Sunday afternoon to win the doubles title of the 1999 Top of theHill ITA Region II Indoor Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Centeron the campus of the University of North Carolina. With the victory Winterand Croker automatically qualify for the 2000 Rolex National IndoorChampionships, the third leg of the ITA Grand Slam, which will be heldFebruary 3-6, in Dallas, Texas.

Winter, a fourth year, and Croker, a third year, advanced to Sunday’s finalby defeating William & Mary’s Jody Strik and Brian Lubin 6-3, 6-3. InFriday evening’s quarterfinals, Winter and Croker teamed to defeat JamesMadison’s Andrew Lux and Troy Stone 8-6. The duo moved into the quarterswith an 8-4 win over South Carolina’s Jarome Jourdan and Robert Steckley.In the tournament, which began on Thursday, November 4, Winter and Crokerwon five doubles matches.

Winter was the only Virginia player to advance past the first round of MainDraw singles play. He defeated Jody Strik of William & Mary 6-4, 6-3. InSaturday’s second round, Winter lost to Andreas Mardbrink of Campbell 7-6(6), 7-5.
