CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer willtravel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the 1999 Atlantic CoastConference Men’s Soccer Tournament. The tournament will be held at theSpry Soccer Stadium on the Wake Forest University campus on November 11, 12and 14. The Cavaliers are seeded #7 in the tournament and will face the #2seeded Maryland Terrapins on Thursday, November 11 at 5:30 p.m. in theopening quarterfinal round.

UVa’s upcoming game with Maryland will mark the 27th time Virginiahas participated in an ACC Tournament contest. The Cavaliers own an 18-5-3(.788) record in Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament action since thesingle-elimination event began in 1987. After posting just a 2-3-2 (.426)mark in the first four tournaments, the Wahoos have been nearly unstoppablewith a 16-2-1 (.868) mark from 1991-1998. The two losses came to Maryland(2-0) in the 1996 finals and to Duke (3-1 in overtime) in the 1998semifinals. The lone tie was a 2-2 knot with Clemson in the 1994semifinal, from which the Cavaliers advanced 5-4 in penalty kicks. In all,the Blue and Orange has claimed seven of the 12 ACC Tournament titles andhas been in the finals eight of the last nine season, including a string ofeight consecutive final appearances.

Virginia trails Maryland in the all-time series meeting 20-29-6.The Terrapins handed the Cavaliers a 1-0 loss earlier this season inCollege Park, Md. in their only meeting of the year. Last season, Virginiadefeated Maryland 4-1 in Charlottesville, Va. on Sept. 16. Although UVatrails in the all-time series meeting with Maryland, Virginia has held theupper hand during the 1990’s as the Cavaliers are 7-3-3 (.654) against theTerrapins during that time span.
