College Park, Md. – Old Dominion’s Marina DiGiacomo scored a pair ofgoals today to help the Lady Monarchs defeat the Cavaliers 3-0 in CollegePark in the first round of the 1999 NCAA Championships. This marks thethird consecutive year that the Monarchs have defeated the Cavaliers in theNCAA tournament.

ODU’s Adrienne Yoder scored on a backdoor penalty corner to givethe Monarchs all the offense they would need just 3:26 into the contest.DiGiacomo made it 2-0 as she converted a penalty stroke to the lower rightcorner eight minutes later. The Monarchs led at halftime 2-0.

The Cavaliers had hope, though, as their earlier contest thisseason saw the Monarchs take a 2-0 lead at halftime. In that second half,Virginia scored a pair of goals to send the game into overtime but fell inthe extra session 3-2.

In today’s game, DiGiacomo scored halfway through the period on acorner goal to increase the lead to 3-0. It was to be all of the scoringfor the remainder of the game.

With the loss the Cavaliers conclude the 1999 campaign at 13-8.Virginia’s Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) tied the recordfor assists as a second year with 19 on the season and has moved into thetop-10 all-time at Virginia with 24. Laura Lindsay (Deerfield,Mass./Deerfield Academy) notched her 44th career assist this season andstands second all-time at Virginia and seventh all-time in the AtlanticCoast Conference. Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) finishesher career ranked tenth in the ACC in scoring with 65 goals and 27 assistsand she also ranks fourth all-time at Virginia. Jessica Coleman (Oceanport,N. J./Shore Regional) led the Cavaliers in scoring this season with 54points, which ranks second all-time as a second year and is fourth all-timefor a single season at UVA.
