CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers and Princeton Tigersmen’s soccer teams began play in the 1999 Men’s Division I SoccerChampionship by facing off in a first round match. The Cavaliers brought a12-8-1 record into the contest, while the Tigers entered tournament playwith a mark of 11-4-2. After both teams traded goals in regulation, UVarecorded the game-winning goal in the third overtime period to gather a 2-1victory in front of 1,478 spectators at Kl?ckner Stadium.

Virginia jumped on the scoreboard first when Ryan Gibbs sent acrossing pass from the right side of the goal to teammate Kyle Martino, whothen headed the ball past Princeton goalkeeper Jason White at 8:56 to givethe Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Virginia held on to its one goal cushion andtook the 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Trailing by a goal throughout most of the second half of play, itlooked like Virginia was going to hold on for a 1-0 victory. However,Princeton’ window of opportunity opened with less than six minutesremaining in the contest. After having several scoring opportunity turninto near misses, the Tigers’ Matt Striebel gathered a loose ball in frontof the Virginia goal and fed teammate Lucas Moskowitz with a cross from theright side of the goal. Moskowitz gathered Striebel’s cross and fired ashot from 17 yards away past UVa goalkeeper David Comfort to knot the gameat 1-1. The two teams would remain tied and headed into overtime.

Neither team could tally the game-winning goal through two 15minute overtime periods, and the game moved to a third overtime session.After just over 127 minutes of play, Virginia’s Drew O’Donnell gathered afeed from teammate Steve Totten and score the game-winning marker at 127:15to give the Cavaliers a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Tigers.

With the win, UVa’s record improves to 13-8-1 on the season, whilethe loss drops Princeton’s record to 11-5-2 on the year. The Cavalierswill now advance to the second round of the tournament to face the BrownBears. Brown advanced to the second round after defeating Rhode Island 2-1today in overtime.

The Virginia vs. Brown contest is scheduled to be played on Sunday,November 28. The game will be played in Charlottesville, Va. at Kl?cknerStadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
