CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Cavaliers close out December with the Nationwide Cavalier Classic. This is the second straight season that Virginia has hosted the tournament over the holiday break.
Virginia meets Butler on Dec. 29 and Syracuse on Dec. 30. Radford meets Syracuse on Dec. 29 and plays Butler on Dec. 30.
The Cavaliers meet the Butler Bulldogs for the first time. Butler is 3-6 coming into the tournament and have lost five straight games. The Bulldogs have not won since Nov. 27 when they defeated Northern Iowa 74-58. Butler is 0-3 on the road this season. Three Bulldogs average in double figures led by junior forward Valerie Burg with 12.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg and followed by sophomore guard Kristen Bodine 12.2 ppg, 5.3 rpg and junior center Julie Schrader 11.4 ppg, 6.7 rpg.
On day two of the tournament, Virginia faces Syracuse. This will be the third time the two teams have met with the Cavaliers holding a 2-0 advantage in the series. The last time these two teams met was on Dec. 5, 1987 and the Cavaliers defeated the Orangewomen 87-50 in the finals of the Investors’ Classic in University Hall. The previous meeting took place on Dec. 29, 1985 in the finals of the Carrier Classic in Syracuse with Virginia coming home with the championship and an 84-61 win.
Leading scorer for the Orangewomen is junior forward Beth Record 17.8 ppg, followed by sophomore guard Jaime James 11.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg and junior forward Leigh Aziz 10.4 ppg, 7.8 ppg.
Time Changes for Nationwide Classic
Please note that the game times for the second day of the Nationwide Cavalier Classic have been changed. On Dec. 30, the Butler-Radford game will start at 3:00 p.m. and the Virginia-Syracuse game will start at 5:30 p.m.
ACC Action Heats Up For January
The Cavaliers open the new year with two home ACC contests. Georgia Tech visits University Hall on Jan. 3 followed by a tilt with the Tar Heels on Jan. 6.
Virginia is 0-1 in ACC action this year with the loss coming at Duke on Dec. 5 by a score of 83-62.
The Cavaliers get a break from conference action when they travel to Kent State on Jan. 24 and host Arkansas State on Feb. 13.
LaRue Hits Career High vs Butler
Schuye La Rue connected for 29 points against Butler, eclipsing her career high of 24 she set against Texas. Her 29 points is the most scored by a freshman since Tora Suber hit 29 vs UNC in 1994. Only Dawn Staley (37 vs Wake in 1989) and Heather Burge (30 vs Virginia Tech in 1990) have scored more as a freshman.
Quarles Steals Victory over Siena
Sophomore guard Telisha Quarles stole the ball eight times in the victory over Siena, the most steals by an individual in a single game since Wendy Palmer had 9 in the 78-66 win over Virginia Tech on Dec. 8, 1993. The all-time record for steals in a game is 10, held by Dawn Staley (Temple ’91) and Donna Holt (Maryland ’86).
Stovall Leaves Team
Junior guard Erin Stovall has taken a personal leave of absence from the Virginia women’s basketball team for an indefinite period of time. Stovall, a two-year starter and a pre-season first team All-ACC selection, ranks second on the team in scoring this season with 13.9 points per game. She was replaced in the starting line-up in the Virginia Tech game by sophomore Telisha Quarles. Quarles scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds against the Hokies on Dec. 20.
Head Coach Debbie Ryan indicated that Stovall’s return to the team is uncertain at this time. Stovall left the team to get married to former UVa football player Antonio Dingle on Dec. 23 in Fayetteville, N.C. Dingle is on the roster of the Carolina Panthers of the NFL.
Win Over Tech Boosts Cavaliers
Four of the five starters scored in double figures as the Cavaliers defeated state rival Virginia Tech 67-62 on Dec. 20. Svetlana Volnaya led Virginia with 13 points, followed by Telisha Quarles with 12, Schuye LaRue and Renee Robinson each had 10 and the fifth starter, Lisa Hosac had nine points.
The win boosted the confidence of the Cavaliers who overcame a 13-0 deficit at the beginning of the game and thwarted several comeback bids by the Hokies who had been ranked in the polls earlier in the season. Virginia was also playing without junior guard Erin Stovall who left the team the week before due to personal reasons and rallied despite her absence.
Quarles On A Hot Streak
Sophomore guard Telisha Quarles has scored in double figures in the last five games. During that stretch, she hit a career-high 19 points vs. Old Dominion (Dec. 20) breaking her previous career-high of 17 she set against Duke (Dec. 5) and connecting for 18 against Siena (Dec. 28). Her high last year was seven points.
In the last five games, Quarles has averaged 15.8 ppg and has been the Cavaliers’ leading scorer in two of the five games. Last season, she averaged 2.2 ppg. She is averaging 18.0 ppg vs. ranked opponents this year.
Dominant Rebounder Still MIA
Virginia is still in a quest for a dominant force on the boards this season. Not since Wendy Palmer graduated in 96 has UVa had a presence under the boards.
Freshman Schuye LaRue leads the squad in rebounding (6.2 rpg) this season while senior Lisa Hosac and junior Svetlana Volnaya follow with 4.6 rpg and 4.4 rpg, respectively.
LaRue has had the Cavaliers’ only game with double figures in rebounds with 14 vs. Texas (Nov. 27).
Mitchelson Returns to Line-up
After sitting out six games with a separated right shoulder, junior forward Dean’na Mitchelson returned to action on Dec. 10 vs. Old Dominion.
Mitchelson played only two minutes in the season opener vs. St. Joseph’s before suffering the injury and had not seen action in any games until the Cavaliers met ODU.
Against the Monarchs, Mitchelson nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds in only 22 minutes of action.
Hosac Lifts Cavaliers To Win Over Loyola
Senior Lisa Hosac took command of the offense and scored a season-high 22 points to lead Virginia to a win over Loyola on Tuesday. Hosac, who had been averaging just 7.3 points per game, exploded for 11 points in the first half on 4-8 shooting from the field, including 1-1 from three-point range. She was more deadly in the second half going 5-7 from the field. She also led the team with seven rebounds, tied with Svetlana Volnaya.
Quarles Hits Career-High Against Blue Devils
One of the bright spots in Sunday’s loss at Duke was the emergence of sophomore Telisha Quarles. The native of Louisa, Va. led Virginia with 17 points against Duke with 14 of those points coming in the second half. She was 7-10 from the field in the second half. Her previous career-high was eight points which she set three times this year in the St. Joseph’s, Grambling, and Washington games.
Tough Start For the Cavaliers
The 4-4 start this season in its first eight games of the season is Virginia’s worst start since the 1977-78 season when they opened 3-5. That was also Head Coach Debbie Ryan’s first season as head coach at Virginia. The team finished 8-17 that year.
LaRue Named ACC Rookie of the Week (Nov. 30)
Schuye LaRue was named the ACC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 30 after her performance in the Rainbow Wahine Classic. In the three-game tournament, LaRue averaged 19.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and was 24-39 from the floor for a shooting percentage of 61.5 percent. In the Washington game, LaRue was a perfect 9-9 from the floor, 1-1 from three-point range and 2-2 from the free throw line. She tied the school record for field goal percentage, a mark that was set in 1995 by Wendy Palmer and matched last season by DeMya Walker. LaRue was also named to the All-Tournament Team along with teammate Erin Stovall.
In the Polls
With Virginia grabbing the final spot in the preseason USA Today poll, the Cavaliers extended their streak in the polls. However, by not securing a spot in the pre-season AP poll, the Cavaliers’ streak of 182 consecutive weeks in that poll is history. Up until the polls of Nov. 22, the Cavaliers had been ranked every week in either the AP or USA Today poll since Jan. 8, 1984-a total of 281 consecutive weeks.
Virginia holds the longest streak of any ACC team in the AP poll-182 weeks. The streak in the AP poll started on Nov. 20, 1989 and ended this season. The Cavaliers had appeared in every USA Today poll for a total of 261 consecutive weeks.
