Charlottesville, Va – Rachel Hiskins scored on Maryland’s only shot of the overtime period to help the Terrapins claim the 1998 ACC Field Hockey Championship in Charlottesville, Va.

The top-seeded Cavaliers outshot the Terrapins 11-3, including a 7-1 advantage in the second half, but Virginia could not get the ball past Maryland keeper Angela Platt.

After a scoreless regulation, Maryland was awarded a penalty corner with just over 5 minutes remaining in the period Hiskins hit the ball out to Championships MVP Jen Pratt, who stopped the ball for Caroline Walter, who hit it to Hiskins who one-timed it into the cage for the championship.

Named to the All-Tournament team were Maryland’s Pratt, Autumn Welsh, Angela Platt, Caroline Walter, Virginia’s Lori Matropietro, Michelle Vizzuso, Lorraine Vizzuso, Wake Forest’s Amy Marchell, Meghan Nitka, Duke’s Mary Jo Reider, and Carolina’s Nancy Pelligreen and Jana Toepel.

Both teams now await bids to the 1998 NCAA Field Hockey Championships, which will be sent out on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
