Softball Shuts Out Wichita State

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The University of Virginia softball team opened play in the Ringor/Winthrop Invitational by posting a 2-0 win over Wichita State in its first game of the tournament.
Stacey Zagol started on the mound for the Cavaliers, pitching a no-hitter for UVa. She recorded nine strikeouts and allowed only one walk in her outing. At the plate, Virginia collected five hits led by Mariruth Graham (1-2, 1 RBI, double, run). Meaghan Young (1-3, 1 RBI), Lori Reese (1-3, run), Beth Crimi (1-3) and Amy Peay (1-3) each added hits in the win.
The victory improves Virginia’s record to (14-14) overall. UVa’s second game against UNC-Wilmington, scheduled for 8:00 p.m., was postponed due to rain. The Cavaliers will continue competition in the Winthrop Invitational on March 21-22. Virginia is scheduled to play UNC-Wilmington (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday, along with Dayton (TBA) and Princeton (TBA) to round out Virginia’s field in the tournament.
