BALTIMORE, MD – Virginias Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) was named the recipient of the Dr. D. M. Nigro award at the UNICO National Convention in Baltimore this weekend. The Nigro Award is presented to the top amateur athlete in the nation of Italian-American descent.

Vizzuso is a three-time All-American as a junior, having been named to the first team for the first time in 1997. She was named to the United States National Field Hockey team in 1997 and competed in the 1998 World Cup in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in May. She scored the USs only goal in the game against World and Olympic champions Australia. Vizzuso also scored the opening goal in the Championship game of the USFHA Summer League tournament.

In 1996 she became the first Cavalier to record double-digit scoring in both goals and assists and she repeated that feat in 1997. Her 21 assists in 1997 is the best mark for a season in school history and her 35 career assists ranks her third all-time at Virginia. She ranks fourth all-time at Virginia in scoring with 107 points.
