ATHENS, Ga. – University of Virginia junior diver Courtney Colbert (BrownDeer, Wisc./Rufus King) finished eighth with 356.90 points in the one-meterdiving competition at the Georgia Diving Invitational this evening at theGabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia. Freshmanteammate Alison Sharp (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) scored 354.40 points tofinish ninth on the one-meter board.

Colbert was in 11th place with 312.65 points in the preliminaries, whileSharp stood in seventh place after the prelims with a total of 348 points.Colbert scored 151.10 points in the semis before tallying 356.90 points inthe 11-dive finals. Sharp’s score of 166.55 points in the semis wasseventh best, but ended up in ninth place with a score of 354.40 in thefinals. Cavalier sophomore Nicole Triden (Deephaven, Minn./Minnetonka)scored 266.15 points in the preliminaries, but did not advance to thesemifinals. Miami’s Katie Beth Bryant won the one-meter competition with ascore of 475 points.

In the men’s three-meter diving competition, sophomore Joe Piorkowski(Easton, Pa./Easton) placed 12th with a score of 417.75 points in the11-dive finals. He tallied 391.20 points in the preliminaries and 162.65points in the semifinals. UVa freshman Matt LaConte (Chesire,Conn./Chesire) totaled 375.05 points in the preliminaries, but did notadvance to the semifinals. Stefan Ahrens of Miami won the three-meterdiving with a score of 662.20 points.

The Virginia men’s and women’s diving teams continue competition in theGeorgia Diving Invitational tomorrow with prelims beginning at 11:00 a.m.and finals at 6:00 p.m. The men will compete on the one-meter board, whilethe women will dive from the three-meter board.
