CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — University of Virginia senior golfer James Driscoll (Brookline, Mass./Taft) was named one of the top 10 leading amateurs of 1999 by Golf Digest Magazine. Driscoll is ranked eighth in the prestigious list and is the first Virginia undergraduate to be named to the list. Tom McKnight, an 1976 graduate of the University of Virginia, was named to the list in 1998.

Last year, Driscoll won the North & South Amateur, reached the quarterfinals of U.S. Amateur, tied for 25th at the Northeast Amateur, tied for 27th at Sunnehanna, tied for 44th at Porter Cup and placed 35th at Monroe. While competing for the University of Virginia in 1999, he had four top-10 finishes. He has a total of 18 top-10 finishes for his career.

Hunter Haas (Ft. Worth, Texas) was named the top amateur of 1999. David Gosset (Germantown, Pa.), ranked number two, defeated Driscoll in the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals. The Top 10 amateurs of 1999 are listed below:

Won U.S. Amateur, tied for 39th at Porter Cup and at Northeast, U.S. Walker Cup team member, two college victories.

3. LUKE DONALD, 22, High Wycombe, England (unranked)
Won NCAA Ch., won five other college events, member Great Britain-Ireland, Walker Cup team.

4. STEVE SCOTT, 22, Coral Springs, Fla. (unranked)
Won Western, tied for third at Monroe, for fifth at Sunnehanna, for 20th at Porter Cup, for 23rd at NCAA Ch., for 25th at Northeast, eighth at Southern, reached second round of Dixie, U.S. Walker Cup team member, three college victories.

5. ED LOAR, 22, Rockwall, Tex. (unranked)
Won Sunnehanna and Southern, tied for 25th at Northeast, for 39th at NCAA Ch.,seventh at Porter Cup, 13th at Southwestern, U.S. Walker Cup team member.

6. JONATHAN BYRD, 21, Columbia, S.C. (unranked)
Won Northeast, second at Porter Cup, third at Southern, tied for 16th at NCAA Championship., reached first round of U.S. Amateur, U.S. Walker Cup team member.

7. DANNY GREEN, 42, Jackson, Tenn. (unranked)
Won U.S. Mid-Amateur, tied for 12th at Sunnehanna, for 13th at Northeast, for 15th at Monroe, for 25th at Azalea and Porter Cup, reached third round of U.S. Public Links, first round of Western.

8. JAMES DRISCOLL, 21, Chestnut Hill, Mass. (unranked)
Won North & South, reached quarterfinals of U.S. Amateur, tied for 25th at Northeast, for 27th at Sunnehanna, for 44th at Porter Cup, 35th at Monroe.

9. DAVID EGER, 47, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (unranked)
Won Azalea and Travis Inv., reached quarterfinals of U.S. Mid-Amateur and North & South, tied for fourth at Northeast, for seventh at Dogwood, for ninth at Southern, for 33rd at Porter Cup.

10. CHARLES HOWELL, 20, Augusta, Ga. (unranked)
Reached quarterfinals of Western, first round of U.S. Amateur, second at Sunnehanna, fifth at NCAA Ch., tied for sixth at Northeast, for 12th at Dogwood, one college victory.
