CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia freshman guard Roger Mason (Silver Spring, Md.) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for his play in Virginia’s recent games with Duke and Georgia Tech.

The 6-5 Mason scored 36 points and grabbed five rebounds in the two games. He shot 70.6 percent (12-17) from the field, including a perfect 6-6 from three-point range, and made all six of his free throw attempts. He also had two steals, one assist and one turnover in 52 minutes of playing time in the two games.

In Virginia’s 109-100 overtime loss to Duke on January 5, Mason scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed three rebounds. He made 75 percent (9-12) of his shots from the field, including all three of his three-point field goal attempts, and he made his only free throw attempt. He also had two steals in 28 minutes of action.

In UVa’s 83-65 victory over Georgia Tech on January 8, Mason made 60 percent (3-5) of his field goal attempts, including all three of his three-point field goal attempts, and he made all five of his free throw attempts. He also had two rebounds, one assist and one turnover in 24 minutes of action.

For the season, Mason is averaging 7.7 points and 2.5 rebounds a game.

Virginia is currently 10-4 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. The Cavaliers play at North Carolina State University on Wednesday, Jan. 12 (7:30 p.m.).
