CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia wrestler SteveGarland (Middleton, N.Y./Middleton) has been selected to compete in the2000 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic. TheNWCA , the professional organization for amateur wrestling coaches, hasselected the athletes and coaches who will be invited to compete in the2000 NWCA All-Star Classic. Garland is one of only 20 selected wrestlerschosen from the entire country to participate in the event. The NWCAAll-Star Classic is scheduled to take place on Monday, February 7th atMichigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.

Garland has had an outstanding wrestling season thus far. Hecurrently stands 12-1 overall on the year at 125 lbs. and is ranked fourthin the country in his weight class. He has a dual record of 3-0 withvictories in matches with North Carolina’s Skyler Holdman (5-1), VirginiaMilitary Institute’s Bryan Wacker (fall @ 3:58) and a forfeit win in amatch with Northern Iowa. Garland has recorded two falls, two technicalfalls and two major decision victories this season.

His lone loss this season came to Minnesota’s Leroy Vega at the LasVegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational on December 4th. Vega narrowlyedged Garland by the score of 6-3 in the 125 championship bout. Garlandeventually finished runner-up in the Las Vegas Invite and claimed firstplace on November 11th by earning the 125 lbs. championship in the KeystoneInvitational. Garland will meet Vegas for the second time this season whenthe two face-off in the NWCA All-Star Classic. Vega is currently rankedsecond in the country at 125 lbs.

Among the other athletes invited are four returning NCAA Division IChampions: Doug Schwab of Iowa at 141 pounds, T.J. Williams of Iowa at 157pounds, Kirk White of Boise State at 165 pounds and Cael Sanderson of IowaState at 184 pounds. The host Institution, Michigan State, received aninvitation at 197 pounds for All-American Nick Muzashvili.

The athletes were determined by a five-person selection committee,which met via conference call on Monday, January 3. The two highest ratedathletes from each weight class as determined by the committee receivedinvitations. Athletes have until January 10 to accept or deny theirinvitations. Athletes that do not accept will be replaced by alternatesdetermined by the committee.

In addition, the coaching staff for the NWCA All-Star Classic wasalso determined. The head coaches are Troy Sunderland of Penn State andJack Spates of Oklahoma. The assistant coaches are David Ray of MontanaState-Northern and Steve Lampe of Colby JC.

The head coaches are the two highest placing teams from theprevious NCAA Division I Championships. Head Coaches may only serve onceevery 10 years. The assistant coaches are from NCAA Division. II, NCAADivision. III, NAIA and NJCAA college programs, based upon the teamfinishes at the previous year’s national championships.
