Charlottesville, VA — The Virginia women’s soccer team was delayed one day in their introduction to their fans, but they started off their home campaign with a win over the UAB Blazers 1-0 tonight at Klockner Stadium. Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, IN/Pike) collected a through ball from Brooke Stastny (Brooklandville, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) in the 16th minute and pulled around the keeper for the easy putaway to give the Cavaliers the lead they would never relinquish.

The Cavalier defense did not allow a shot for the first 66 minutes of the game and allowed only three shots all game. Keeper Jodi Clugston (Red Hill, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) made one save to preserve the shutout, the second of the season and of her career. On the other side of the ball, ten different Cavaliers took a total of 21 shots, forcing the UAB keeper to make six saves.

Two Cavalier shots hit the cross bar, and a shot by Aly Benitez (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary) was saved off the line by UAB’s Stephanie Davis. Virginia took ten corner kicks to the Blazers’ one, which came in the first half.

The Cavaliers will now travel to Hartford, Conn. to face the seventh-ranked Hawks of Hartford on Saturday, Sept. 9. Game time is 7:00 pm.
