Virginia, which has won eight consecutive home openers coming into today’s contest, made it nine in a row with a 2-0 shutout of Northwestern. The Cavaliers kept the ball out of their cage thanks to four saves by Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) and two post saves by Julia Richardson (Atlanta, Ga./Stone Ridge (Md.). Virginia has not allowed a goal in the last 225:18, a span of four games.

After a scoreless first half, Northwestern came out on fire in the second half, forcing a pair of corners early where Richardson made one of her posts saves in this early assault. But the Cavaliers held, and on a counter attack Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) sent a ball down to the left corner where it was collected by Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) and sent across the mouth of the goal and was fired home by Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) with 12:31 to play in the half.

Virginia added an insurance goal off a corner play as Katie Jo Gerfen’s (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) shot was tipped in the cage by Vizzuso with 8:46 to play.

The Cavaliers outshot the Wildcats 17-7 and had 15 corners to Northwestern’s 7, including a 10-4 advantage in the second half. The game was also the Cavaliers’ 30th consecutive win against out-of-state, non-conference teams at home.

Virginia will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 17 as they take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. Game time is 1:00.
