Charlottesville, Va. — The 14th-ranked Cavaliers gave No. 2 Clemson all it could handle Friday night before surrendering a goal two minutes into overtime and losing, 2-1. First-year forward Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton North) scored her second goal of the season just 10 minutes into the second half to tie the game at one before the Tigers’ Cindy Mullinix put home a cross from Lindsay Browne in the 92nd minute.

The Hoos played Clemson to a scoreless tie throughout much of the first half. Virginia averted disaster when Ashley Meeker (Zanoni, Va./ Hampton Roads Academy) cleared a ball from off the goal line early in the match. Then, with just five minutes remaining in the half, the Tigers’ Heather Beem sent a long distance shot from the right hand side of the field that saw its way past Cavaliers goalkeeper Jodi Clugston (Red Hill, Pa./ Upper Perkiomen) and into the left side of the goal.

Virginia answered less than 15 minutes later when third-year defender Meeker found Lane on a corner kick. Lane headed the ball past Clemson goalkeeper Katie Carson for the tying goal. In the second half Virginia had a number of opportunities to take the lead, including a Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, Ind./ Pike) shot that sailed just over the crossbar. The Cavaliers outshot the Tigers 6-4 in the second half.

After the hard fought loss, Virginia falls to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. The Hoos return to action Tuesday Oct. 3 when George Washington visits Charlottesville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
