CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia volleyball team won the first two games against North Carolina, but the Tar Heels rallied to win three-consecutive games for a 3-2 (4-15, 15-17, 15-6, 15-12, 15-11) victory over the Cavaliers in ACC volleyball action Saturday evening (October 7). UNC improves to 16-3 overall and 6-0 in the ACC, while UVa falls to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead with 15-4 and 17-15 wins in the first two games. The Tar Heels won the third game 15-6 to pull within 2-1. UNC took a 10-6 lead in the fourth game, but the `Hoos closed to within 10-9. North Carolina eventually won 15-12 to even the match at two games apiece. In the fifth and deciding game, the score was knotted at 6-6, before UNC took an 8-6 lead. The Cavaliers came back to tie the game at 8-8. With the score tied at 10-10, the Tar Heels took the lead for good and eventually won 15-11.

Fourth-year middle Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) led Virginia with 21 kills, six blocks, five digs and three service aces. The 21 kills marked Zwarich’s fifth 20-plus kill match of the season. First-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) recorded her second double-double in as many nights with 13 kills and 17 digs. Third-year utility player Jenny Harmon (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) notched 12 kills, six digs, five blocks and two service aces. Fourth-year outside hitter Katie Jones (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) registered a match-high 27 digs to establish a new career high in that category. First-year setter Abby Whittenburg (Amarillo, Texas/Amarillo) tallied 52 assists, six digs and two blocks. First-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) and fourth-year setter Cathy Arnette (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) added 18 digs apiece.

Freshman outside hitter Nicole Reis led the Tar Heels with a match-high 29 kills and added 16 digs and three blocks. Senior outside hitter Casey Simpson and sophomore outside hitter Laura Greene contributed 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Greene also added nine digs. Sophomore setter Eve Rackham dished out a match-high 58 assists and added 15 digs and four block assists. Senior defensive specialist Liz Feldman led UNC in digs with 26.

The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, October 10 when they travel to Lynchburg, Va. for a 7:30 p.m. match at Liberty.
