Womack Named ACC co-Offensive Player of the Week
Oct. 9, 2000
Charlottesville, Va. – UVa tailback Antwoine Womack was named co-ACC Offensive Back of the Week with Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke last week.
Womack, a 5-11, 204, junior from Hampton, Va., posted his second consecutive 100-yard effort in the Cavaliers’ 31-23 win over Maryland last Saturday. Womack used a career-high 29 carries to rush for 133 yards, an average of 4.6 yards per carry. He out-rushed the entire Maryland team, including LaMont Jordan, by 24 yards. Womack also caught one pass that he turned into a 41-yard gain for the Cavaliers’ longest pass play of the afternoon.
Womack was at his best in the second half, gaining 88 yards on 16 carries (5.5 avg.), including 60 in the fourth quarter.
He is the second-leading rusher in the ACC this season with an average of 107.7 yards per game.
Curiously this is the first time this season a running back has been named the league’s offensive back of the week.
Weinke threw for a career-high 496 yards and three touchdowns in the Seminoles’ 27-24 loss at Miami. The 496 yards were the sixth-highest single-game passing total in ACC history and the most ever by an ACC quarterback against a ranked team.
Other winners of the weekly conference awards are: Clemson G Will Merritt–Offensive Lineman, N.C. State LB Levar Fisher–Defensive Lineman, Maryland DB Shawn Forte–Defensive Back, Wake Forest P Matt Brennie–Specialist, N.C. State QB Philip Rivers–Rookie.
