Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area) scored a pair of goals and the Cavalier defense held the nation’s second-leading scorer without a point on the night as the Hoos defeated #11 James Madison 3-2 tonight in Harrisonburg. Slocum pounced on a pair of balls, slamming them into the cage to give the Cavaliers (8-4) leads of 1-0 and 3-1. Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton) stopped seven shots, holding the Dukes (10-4), who were the nation’s fourth-ranked offense, to a pair of goals.

Slocum gave the Cavaliers the early lead as she picked up a loose ball in the circle and deposited it in the empty cage ten minutes into the game. Ten minutes later the Dukes were awarded a corner but Julia Richardson (Atlanta, Ga./Stone Ridge) made a defensive save to keep JMU off the board. The Dukes tied the ball with just under four minutes to play in the half as Traci Forchetti tipped a shot past Worthington to tie the game. But just over a minute later the Cavaliers forced a corner and Jess Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) rocketed a shot into the corner of the cage to give the Hoos a lead they would not relinquish. Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) and were credited with assists on the play. Virginia took a 2-1 lead in the break.

Eight minutes into the second half Slocum one-timed a loose ball into the cage on a scramble at the top of the circle, posting the Hoos to a 3-1 lead. James Madison finally got on the board in the second half with 7:10 to play as Forchetti again scored on a scramble in front of the net, but that would be all the scoring in the game as the Cavaliers turned away the Dukes in circle as time expired.

The Cavaliers open up a four-game homestand with the Georgetown Hoyas this Friday, October 13. Game time against the Hoyas is 7:00 pm on the University Hall Turf Field.
