CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Richmond women’s soccer team upset the 16th-ranked University of Virginia Wednesday (October 18), 4-1. Spiders forward Brooke Sands scored the game-winner 20:18 into the game on Richmond’s first shot of the match.

Despite outshooting the Spiders, 16-10, and generating more scoring opportunities, UVa fell behind 4-0 after a pair of goals by Richmond’s Jenna Merriam and an unassisted strike from Bethany Shewmaker.

The Cavaliers finally got on the board at 86:03 of the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick after third-year Lindsey Grubbs (Corona Del Mar, CA/ Corona Del Mar) was pulled down in the box. Fourth-year Lori Lindsey (Indianapolis, Ind./ Pike) converted the penalty for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Virginia’s next game is a home ACC matchup with No. 11 Duke Saturday (October 21). The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., and will be followed by a men’s soccer match against the Blue Devils.
