Virginia (10-5) kept the Highlanders (2-13) without a shot in the second half and held on for a shutout win over the in-state rivals, defeating Radford 5-0 tonight. Lorraine Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) and Jessica Coleman (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) both notched a pair of goals to pace the Cavalier attack, and Carrie Goodloe (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) added a pair of assists.
The Cavaliers got on the board five minutes into the game as Vizzuso took the ball to the top of the circle and fired a shot that found its way into the net. Virginia then used a pair of interceptions to notch two goals in a span of 1:25. Goodloe poked the ball away to Coleman, who dribbled into the circle and fired a shot into the boards at 12:42. Eighty-five seconds later Goodloe again stole the ball and slotted it to Vizzuso, who scored, putting the Hoos up 3-0. The teams went to the break with this score. Vizzuso’s goal was the 37th of her career, which moves her to #7 all-time at Virginia in career goals.
Four minutes into the second period Kelli Hill (Mansaquan, N.J./Mansaquan) pounced on a loose ball at the top of the circle and fired it home for a 4-0 lead. Just 1:48 later the Cavaliers were awarded a penalty corner that Coleman shot to the boards for a lead of 5-0. Goodloe and Mason White (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) were credited with assists on the play. Coleman’s goal gives her 84 career points, which moves her into a tie for eighth-place all-time in scoring (35 g, 14 a). It was also her 35th career goal, which ranks ninth all-time.
With 23 minutes to play Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) came into the game, taking over for starting keeper Becky Worthington (Fairview Village, Pa./Methacton), who made three saves to preserve the shutout.
The Cavaliers will host #4 Wake Forest on Sunday, Oct. 22 at the University Hall Turf Field. Game time against the Demon Deacons is 1:00.
