#16 Cavaliers Upset #11 Duke, 4-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #16 Virginia Women’s soccer team battled back from a two-goal deficit Saturday night (October 21), to beat the 11th-ranked Duke Blue Devils 4-3 at Kl?ckner Stadium.
The `Hoos were forced to play from behind early when Duke’s Carly Fuller scored 6:43 into the game. The Blue Devils added to their lead just five minutes later on a goal by Gwendolyn Oxenham. The two teams traded possession for the next 18 minutes, until Virginia second-year Alyssa Benitez (Lake Mary, Fl./ Lake Mary) took a feed from third-year Darci Borski (Philadelphia, Pa./ Nazareth Academy) and riffled a shot past Duke goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir.
UVa struck first in the second half on a long distance shot by fourth-year Katie Tracy (Richmond, Va./ James River). Tracy, who was playing her last regular season home game as a Cavalier, received the ball at the top of the box after a deflection and hammered home her fourth goal of the season. Virginia then took its first lead of the match when first-year Erin Engelhardt (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./ Immaculate Heart) scored off a feed from first-year Sarah Lane (Wheaton, Ill/ Wheaton North).
The Cavs’ lead was short lived, as Duke’s Sarah Pickens answered eight minutes later on a breakaway goal to knot the score at 3. Virginia took the lead for good, however, when Benitez beat a number of Blue Devils defenders and slid a shot under Helgadottir for her second goal of the game at 80:32. With the win, the `Hoos move to 9-7 on the season and 3-3 in the ACC heading in to their last match of the season, a crucial road game against Florida State next Saturday (October 28).
