FSU Weekend – October 26-28

Thursday, October 26

We just finished our last training session before the FSU game. It was a good session which focused on “one on one” defending, finishing, and restarts. Unfortunately, about 30 minutes into training, Kelly Worden, one of our starting central defenders, sprained her ankle. It doesn’t look like she will travel … very disappointing. Despite this loss we are all very excited about the trip. A win at Florida State will help us a lot in the final ACC standings and hopefully will give us momentum for the tournament.

ROAD TRIP

Today was full of traveling. We left University Hall at noon and after a bus ride to Richmond and two flights, we arrived in Tallahassee at 7:00. From the airport we drove to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner and on to our hotel. Now we are all unpacking before our scheduled team meeting. Tonight we’re looking forward to going to bed early and sleeping in tomorrow morning.

GAMEDAY!

Saturday, October 28….am

Everyone approaches gameday a little differently. Some of us like to sleep, others watch TV, and the more ambitious spend a lot of the day catching up on work. We always meet for a big breakfast in the morning and usually we go to the stadium to jog and stretch. After breakfast today though we had a nice surprise. Because our hotel is part of a country club the coaches had arranged for us to drive golf balls. I had a lot of fun trying out a new sport and realizing that I am many years away from the LPGA tour. The highlight was watching some of the best athletes I know struggle to even make contact with the golf ball. I did a little work earlier so now it is time to watch the football team beat up on UNC and take a nap before lunch (peanut butter and jelly for me!!!).

Saturday … pm

We’re all really excited right now because we just beat Florida State. The game was really close and both teams had a lot of chances. Finally, with less than three minutes to play, Aly [Alyssa Benitez] scored to put us ahead 1-0. This win puts us in a four-way tie for second place in the ACC. A big thanks to the volleyball team for coming out to our game and cheering us on!!!

BACK HOME

We’re finally home and it’s time to get ready for the week. Fortunately I did get some work done on the road but of course I didn’t finish it all. This week we’ll train Monday and Tuesday and leave for the ACC’s on Wednesday. Hopefully I’ll also get a chance to watch a basketball practice or two. The team plays Wednesday night and I am sad I won’t be there. I am excited for basketball this year but I have to admit, right now I am looking forward to playing lots more soccer in the month ahead!
