FARMERS BRANCH, Texas – Fourth-year University of Virginia men’s tennis player Huntley Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) won his first round singles match at the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday (Feb. 1). Montgomery defeated Mississippi State’s Rene Combette, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers’ Brian Vahaly (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) fell to the tournament’s No. 4 seed, Oskar Johansson from Arkansas, 6-0, 6-2. Johansson defeated Vahaly in the finals of the T. Rowe Price Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships in September, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. The Rolex tournament is the third leg of the ITA Grand Slam. Vahaly previously advanced at least the quarterfinal round in each of the previous two grand slam events.

The No.1-ranked doubles pair of Vahaly and Montgomery – the tournament’s top seeded duo – fell to Stanford’s Scott Lipinsky and David Martin, 7-6, 7-6. With the lose, the doubles team will not improve on its two consecutive appearances in the finals of an ITA Grand Slam event

Montgomery will play defending NCAA champion Alex Kim Friday morning (Feb. 2). Vahaly, meanwhile, will play in the consolation bracket tomorrow morning and will team with Montgomery in a consolation doubles match Friday afternoon.
