GREENSBORO, N.C.– – University of Virginia freshman forward J.C. Mathis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has been selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Rookie of the Week for his play in Virginia’s victories over nationally-ranked opponents Maryland and Wake Forest last week.

The 6-8 Mathis scored 10 points, grabbed four rebounds and provided Virginia with a strong defensive effort in valuable minutes off the bench in the Cavaliers’ two wins. With frontcourt reserve Stephane Dondon missing both games with an injury and center/forward Travis Watson sidelined with a hip pointer for several minutes against Wake Forest, Mathis provided the Cavaliers with an inside presence. He was 4-6 from the field and made both of his free throw attempts in the two games. He also had one assist and one turnover in 35 minutes of action.

In UVa’s 99-78 win over Maryland on January 31 at University Hall, Mathis scored two points in 13 minutes of action.

In the Cavaliers’ 82-71 victory over Wake Forest at University Hall on February 3, Mathis scored a career-high eight points and tied his career-high with four rebounds. He also had one assist and one turnover in a career-high 22 minutes of action.

Mathis shared ACC Rookie of the Week honors with Trey Guidry of North Carolina State. Joseph Forte of North Carolina was selected the ACC Player of the Week.

Virginia is currently 16-4 overall and 5-4 in the ACC.
