COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Virginia wrestling team defeated the Maryland Terrapins by the score of 20-15 in the Cavaliers final Atlantic Coast Conference dual match of the regular season. UVa won six of the ten weigh class bouts, including a stretch of five consecutive matches victories in the five point win.

Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) put Virginia ahead by the score of 6-0 when he opened the dual match with a fall over Maryland’s James Taylor 4:24 into the heavyweight bout. Maryland won the next two weight class (125, 133) to pull out to a 7-6 lead (the Terrapins only lead of the dual) before UVa won five consecutive weight classes to secure a Cavalier victory.

Virginia’s Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) earned a 7-5 victory over Maryland’s Mark Mansueto in the 141 lbs. match to give the Cavaliers a 9-7 advantage and a lead they would not relinquish. P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) topped Bryan Robinovitz by the score of 2-0 to win the 149 lbs. match. However, one team-point was deducted from both Virginia and Maryland’s team score for unsportsmanlike conduct by both wrestlers, making the score 11-6 in favor of UVa. The Cavaliers’ Don Carlos-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) defeated Rob Booth by the count of 12-6 at 157 lbs. and UVa’s Greg Francesca earned an 8-5 victory over Josh Weidman at 165 lbs. before Brian Muir defeated Sal Aquia by the score of 8-4 at 174 lbs. to extend Virginia’s lead to 20-6.

Maryland won the last two matches of the dual (184, 197) to close to within five team points of UVa at 20-15.

With the victory, Virginia improves its dual match record to 6-7 overall, 2-2 in the ACC. Maryland falls to 4-6 overall, 1-3 in the conference with the loss.

The Cavaliers will return to home action on Saturday, February 17th when UVa hosts the Clarion Golden Eagles in Virginia’s final regular season dual match of the season. Competition is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium.
