RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia softball team fell to Tennessee 4-1 in the championship game of the Gold Bracket in the 24-team Triangle Classic Softball Tournament Sunday afternoon (February 18). The Cavaliers advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota in Gold Bracket play Sunday morning.

Virginia concluded play in the three-day tournament with a 4-2 record and had two players named to the Triangle Classic All-Tournament team. Third-year pitcher/first baseman Kristen Dennis (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and second-year third baseman Ruby Rojas (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei) are UVa’s representatives on the 10-player All-Tournament team.

The Cavaliers opened the tournament by splitting their first two games on Friday, February 16. UVa defeated Long Island 5-2 in its first game of the season and then lost to Indiana 5-2. The Cavaliers won Pool C by defeating Elon 4-1 on Saturday, February 18. Virginia opened Gold Bracket play Saturday night with a 3-0 victory over Wright State. UVa advanced to the championship game of the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Minnesota before falling to Tennessee 4-1 in the title game.

Virginia (4-2) returns to action on Thursday, February 22 when it travels to Los Angeles, Calif., for a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount at 4:00 p.m. The Cavaliers then participate in the Santa Barbara Invitational February 23-25.
