CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The University of Virginia’s Svetlana Volnaya was selected by the Detroit Shock in the third round (38th pick) of the 2001 WNBA Draft on April 20. Volnaya became the 11th women’s basketball player in school history to be selected in the WNBA draft.

The senior forward was second on the team in scoring this past season with an average of 12.6 points in 31 games. Volnaya led the Atlantic Coast Conference in three-point field goal percentage (45.0) and was sixth in the league with an average of 1.58 three-point field goals per game. She finished her career 18th on the Virginia scoring list with 1,034 points in three seasons.

Volnaya was a Kodak Honorable Mention All-American and an All-ACC First Team selection following her junior season. She entered 2000-01 as a preseason All-ACC selection and was selected as one of the team captains. Volnaya scored a season-high 27 points in the 69-56 victory at Maryland on February 5 and pumped in a career-high six three-point field goals. The senior forward was named ACC Player of the Week on December 4, 2000, after averaging 17 points in three games for the Cavaliers.
