The Virginia Cavaliers (11-6) have accepted a bid to the 2001 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships and will face in-state rival James Madison (10-8) on Thursday, May 10 in Charlottesville at 4:00 pm. This is the sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA post season for the Cavaliers and the 14th overall, the third most appearances in the NCAA tournament by any Division I school. The Cavaliers have won two NCAA titles (1991, 1993) and have been runners up three times (1996, 1998, 1999).

Virginia has faced James Madison once this season, defeating the Dukes 15-6 in Harrisonburg. This will be the second consecutive year that the Cavaliers have faced JMU in the NCAA tournament, as the Hoos lost to James Madison in the NCAA quarterfinals in the 2000 edition of the championships 12-5. Virginia enjoys a 19-9-1 series record against the Dukes in history.
