RALEIGH, N.C. – Third-year middle Simona Kuipers (Bow Island, Alberta, Canada/Senator Gershaw) registered 18 kills and nine digs to lead the University of Virginia volleyball team to a 3-1 (26-30, 30-19, 30-18, 30-21) victory over N.C. State Friday evening (September 21) at Reynolds Coliseum. The win was UVa’s first in the Atlantic Coast Conference as the Cavaliers evened their conference mark at 1-1 and now stand at 5-4 overall. The Wolfpack fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.

Kuipers set career-highs in both kills and digs with 18 and nine, respectively. She also hit a match-high .406 (18 kills, 5 errors, 32 attempts). Second-year outside hitter Paige Davis (Austin, Texas/Westlake) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and a match-high 14 digs. She also added four service aces and three blocks. Second-year outside hitter Katie Synan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) notched 11 kills and nine digs, while first-year setter Lily Phillips (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon) dished out a career-high 50 assists in her first start. Phillips also added six digs and two service aces. Fifth-year outside hitter Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) contributed nine kills, while second-year outside hitter Whitney Ashcraft (Yorktown, Ind./Burris) totaled 10 digs.

Charece Williams led N.C. State with 18 kills and added seven digs. Melanie Rowa also reached double figures in kills with 10, while Lindi Sheppard had 43 assists, 12 digs and three service aces.

After dropping the first game 30-26, Virginia reeled off three consecutive wins in the next three games to earn its first ACC victory of the season. UVa won the second game 30-19 and the third 30-18 before winning the fourth game 30-21.

Virginia hit .287 in the match, while N.C. State hit .152. UVa also held a 61-54 edge in digs and a 12-6 advantage in blocks.

The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday, September 25 when they travel to College Park, Md. to play Maryland at 7:00 p.m.
