CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s soccer team defeated in-state rival Liberty, 7-0, Wednesday night (September 26) in Charlottesville, Va. First-year forward Lindsay Gusick scored the first three goals of her UVa career in a span of 13 minutes to lead the Cavaliers to their fourth win of the season.

Gusick’s first goal came just 5:30 into the match. Ashley Meeker sent a corner kick to Tammy Westinghouse, who headed the ball in Gusick’s direction. Gusick redirected the ball into the net with her head for her first career goal, which made the score 1-0 in favor of Virginia. Just five minutes later, Gusick chipped a ball past Flames goalkeeper Natalie Mayer. She completed the hat trick with a breakaway goal in the 13th minute of play.

Aside form Gusick no other UVa player had more than one goal in the victory. Sarah Lane scored her first goal of the season in the 29th minute off a cross from Erin Engelhardt. Engelhardt scored a goal of her own in the 34th minute, while senior co-captain Lori Lindsey notched her team-high fifth goal of the season in the 45th minute of play. Laura Gaworecki tallied Virginia’s seventh and final goal in the 83rd minute.

Westinghouse assisted on three goals in the game, while Gusick, Engelhardt, Meredith Rhodes, Melissa Somadelis and Taylor Wood each had one assist. Meanwhile, Virginia goalkeepers Anne Abernethy and Ashley Movwery combined to shut out the Flames. The Cavalier duo faced 4 shots and recorded three saves between them.

Virginia returns to action on Saturday, September 29, when the Cavaliers travel to Clemson, S.C. to take on the Clemson Tigers.

NOTES – Virginia outshot Liberty, 24-4 … Gusick paced the Cavaliers with nine shots, while Meeker was second with five … four players scored their first goals of the season in Wednesday night’s game, including Gusick, Lane, Engelhardt and Gaworecki.
