Cavalier Harriers Take Third at NCAA Southeast Regionals

Virginia’s Jennifer Owens took third at the NCAA Southeast Regional and teammates Sarah Folse and Meg McGarvey took 8th and 17th overall as the fourteenth-ranked Cavaliers finished third as a team, giving them enough points to qualify for the NCAA national championships next week at Furman University. Owens covered the 6K race in 21:02 and Folse ran a 21:40. Virginia’s third through eight runners were all just 50 seconds apart, a pack that solidified Virginia’s third place finish. On the men’s side, Walton Kingsberry took 13th, earning All-Region honors and a trip to the NCAA championships as well as the men took fifth as a team.
The Virginia women last went to the NCAA championships in 1993.
The men are awaiting a bid which will be extended on Monday. Kingsberry will go as an at-large selection even if the men are not selected as an at-large team.
