Charlottesville, Va. – The UVa’s Women Soccer Team continued its success with an opening-round victory defeating Liberty 3-0. With this victory, Virginia will play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., against the winner of the William and Mary and Wake Forest match-up this evening.”We are excited, and this game has gotten us ready for Sunday, which will be a tough game,” head coach Steve Swanson said.In the first half, two of the game’s three goals were scored. Early in the half, with over 12 minutes into the game, Ashley Meeker scored the first goal, making this her third goal of the season. In addition, this was her second game-winning goal in the 2001 season. This goal was assisted by Katie Bunch, who crossed the ball from the right side.Alyssa Benitez scored the second goal of the game with just 18 seconds left in the half. She was assisted by Taylor Wood on a cross from the right, which was kicked into the left corner. “Luckily I took the shot,” said Benitez, who scored her third goal of the year this evening.Almost 74 minutes into the game, forward Sarah Lane successfully scored the third and final goal of the game, solidifying the win for Virginia. Lane, who also led the team with four shots, scored the goal after Erin Engelhardt assisted the goal, which was shot from 12 yards out, and landed in the right side of the net. Engelhardt accomplished her sixth assist of the season, and is presently leading the team in assists.Goalkeepers Anne Abernethy and Jodi Clugston both shared time in tonight’s game, aiding in Virginia’s third shut out in the last four games.”Liberty deserves a lot of credit, from the last game they fought hard,” comments Swanson, who admits that their new man-marking system changed from their first match-up this season surprised the Virginia offense. However, it was not enough to stop Virginia. “This competition has prepared us for this point. We will be ready to go,” adds Swanson.
