Virginia Defeats Duke In Wrestling, 28-11

DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia wrestling squad defeated Duke 28-11 on Saturday. Virginia’s Brian Muir opened the match with an 8-4 decision over MattHoover at 174-pounds. Jimi Massey followed with a9-1 major decision versus Frank Cornely to spot theCavaliers to a 7-0 advantage. Massey registered a takedown with justthree seconds remaining in the third period to gain the extra point forVirginia.
Daegan Smith, Duke’s 197-pounder, got the Blue Devils to 7-3 with a decisionover Andrew DeMartino. Smith jumped out to a 6-2lead in the opening period and held on for an 8-5 decision.
Virginia’s ByronDunlap overcame a 2-1 deficit in the third period to defeat Tommy Hoang6-2, at 125-pounds. Stuart Holzer, a senior 133-pounder, earned his 15 win of the season with a14-4 major decision versus Virginia’s Ryan Stewart.
The Cavaliers rebounded to post wins at 141, 149 and 157 pounds to stretch the score to 28-7 with one match remaining.
In the final match, Duke’s Mike Mitchell continued his outstandingseason with a dominating performance versus Don Carlo-Clauss. Mitchellbested his Virginia counterpart 11-1 for his seventh major decisionvictory of the season. The redshirt sophomore is now 24-9 with a 3-0mark in ACC competition. Carlo-Clauss fell to 24-12 with the loss.
