Charlotte, NC — The Charlotte 49ers baseball team sweeps a homedoubleheader from ACC foe Virginia. Charlotte won the first game, 4-1. Then,Charlotte won the second game, 6-5. This marked Charlotte’s firstdoubleheader sweep since a doubleheader with Southern Miss, April, 2000.Charlotte behind the pitching of Matt Savage and Jacob Chaney wonthe first game of the doubleheader, 4-1. Then, Charlotte with a four-runfifth inning, a school-record five double plays and another save by Chaneywon the second game of the doubleheader, 6-5.

“We have to pitch well and play good defense to win games,”Charlotte coach Loren Hibbs said. “Today we did that in both games and beata very good Virginia team.”

Charlotte’s Savage threw a career-high seven and two-thirds inningswith a career-high eight strikeouts and only one walk. He scattered fourhits and only allowed one run. Then, Chaney threw the final one and a thirdinning of scoreless baseball for his first save of the season. Chaney camein the eighth inning with bases loaded and two outs and he struck out MiguelLuina to end Virginia’s scoring threat.

In game one, Charlotte took an early 2-0 lead with two hits on threehits in the second inning. George Sandel connected on a two-run single tocenter field that scored Brad Halvorson and Adam Willard.Charlotte increased their lead to 3-0 when Brad Erwin connected onhis fourth home run of the season over the left center field wall in thethird inning.

Virginia cut the Charlotte lead to 3-1 when Robert Word leadoff thefifth inning with a home run over the right field wall.Charlotte made the final score, 4-1, when George Sandel, who leadoffthe inning with single to center field, scored on a Charlotte infieldgroundout in the seventh inning.

In game two, Virginia scored three runs on four hits in the firstinning to take an early 3-0. Dan Street, Robert Word and Chris Sweetconnected on run-scoring singles in the inning.

Charlotte cut the Virginia lead to 3-2 with two runs on three hitsin the first inning. Brian Bowman scored the first run on Brad Lamm’s singleto right field. Then, George Sandel scored the second run of the inning on aCharlotte infield groundout.

Virginia increased their lead to 4-2 when Dan Street connected on ahome run down the left field line in the fifth inning.

Charlotte took the lead at 6-4 lead with four runs on three hits inthe fifth inning. Brad Lamm scored the first run of the inning on AlexDerhak’s single to left field. Then, Brad Erwin scored the inning’s secondrun on Brad Halvorson’s fielder’s choice. Then, Derhak scored the third runon Thomas Bowker’s single to left field. Adam Willard scored the inning’sfinal run on Brian Bowman’s sacrifice fly to center field.

Virginia scored a run in the sixth inning to make the final score,6-5.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series, Sunday, March10 at 1 pm.
