Raleigh, N.C. – The UVa men’s tennis team lost to North Carolina in the second round of the ACC Tournament by a score of 4-0. The Tar Heels claimed three victories in singles and the doubles point to clinch the victory. Marcio Petrone defeated Michael Duquette at No. 1 singles to clinch the match.

“I’m really proud of this team,” head coach Brian Boland said after the match. “They really worked hard all year as each individual really improved. We were very fortunate to have the kind of leadership we had from Jonathan Chou and Jason Romesburg. They will truly be missed. They brought so much to UVa tennis and I think they helped provide a strong foundation for many years to come. The future is very bright. Each and every player on this team deserves credit for that.”

Trystan Meniane defeated Stephen Nolen at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Nolen drops to 21-15 overall on the season. Geoff Boyd defeated Jonathan Chou at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Jason Romesburg, Jay Curtis and Gregg Alpert did not complete their matches, as the Tar Heels had already clinched the victory thanks to Petrone’s win.

In doubles, Boyd and Meniane clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Alpert and Nolen, just their second loss in seven matches as a team. Romesburg and Curtis lost to Nicholas Monroe and Daniel Pinchbeck, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.

Chou caps his career with 21 career wins in singles, and 31 career wins in doubles, including seven when partnered with Romesburg this season. Romesburg, who finished tied for the team lead in victories this season with 21, not only established a career-high in wins, but also eclipsed his previous three-year total of 18. He has 18 career wins in doubles, including 11 this season alone.

The Cavaliers conclude their 2002 season with a 12-12 overall record. North Carolina advances to take on the winner of the Clemson/Wake Forest match tomorrow at 1 p.m.
