Virginia's Dan Street Selected in 2002 Major League Baseball Draft

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia baseball player Dan Street (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) was selected in the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft in the 20th round as the 591st pick overall by the Colorado Rockies. With his selection, Street became the 46th player from UVa selected in the MLB Draft and is the 30th player from Virginia chosen in the past 14 seasons. He joins Robert Word (10th round, 293rd player overall by the Florida Marlins) as the second UVa player taken in the 2002 MLB Draft.
Street, a fourth-year utility player, started all 57 games he appeared in during the 2002 season. He made 52 starts at third base and five starting appearances on the mound. He recorded a team-high figure in 12 different categories for UVa including: .371 batting average, 86 hits, 59 RBI and 23 doubles. Street’s 23 doubles is the Virginia all-time single season record. He also turned in a team-high .659 slugging percentage, 153 total bases and four triples. Street finished second on the team with 52 runs scored and 12 home runs.
He stands second all-time at Virginia for hits (86) in a single season and total bases (153) in a single season, is tied for third for the most at-bats (232) in a single season and is tied for seventh all-time at UVa for the most home runs in a single season with 12. Street’s 153 total bases, 86 hits, 52 runs, 23 doubles and 12 home runs in 2002 are more than the total number he recorded in each category during his first three years of play combined. He is also second all-time for a career at Virginia after being hit by a pitch 24 times.
Street started five of the seven appearances he made on the mound in 2002 and went 3-0 with an ERA of 4.76. He pitched a total of 34.0 innings and struck out 22 batters. Street held opposing hitters to a .286 batting average and recorded one save.
Street was named to the 2002 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team and was also a First Team All-ACC choice in 2001. In 2001, he was named both the ACC Player of the Week (4/23/01) and the ACC Pitcher of the Week (2/19/01). For his career, Street started 130 of the 152 games he appeared in. He posted a .330 batting average and recorded 170 hits including 37 doubles, 23 home runs and five triples, 286 total bases and scored 103 runs. He also started 18 of the 28 games he appeared in as a pitcher and posted a career record of 11-4 with a 2.67 ERA and 78 strikeouts through 148.1 innings of work.
