Virginia's Melanie Matthews Named to All-District Academic Team

University of Virginia track and field student-athlete Melanie Matthews (Waynesboro/Waynesboro, Va.) was named to the 2001-02 CoSIDA/Verizon Academic All-District III University Division Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team. Matthews, who represented Virginia at the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase in June, ran NCAA qualifying times in both the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5000-meter run. At the ACC Championships held at UVa in April, Matthews finished fifth in the steeplechase and ninth in the 5000-meter run. A biology major, Matthews led Virginia with the fastest 3000-meter time this season and ranked second on the team in both the steeplechase and the 5000-meter run.
