Despite scoring a goal just 1:24 into the contest, the Cavaliers fell to the #5 James Madison Dukes 3-1 today in a field hockey contest held in Harrisonburg. Just over a minute into the game, Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) sent a long ball that was tipped back by a JMU defender. Katie Nicholson (Clarksburg, N.J./Allentown) collected the ball and drew the Madison keeper out of the cage before sending a ball across the circle to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area). Slocum pushed the ball into the empty cage, giving the Cavaliers the early lead 1:24 into the game. The Dukes responded with three unanswered goals to send the Cavaliers (4-1) to their first defeat of the year.
Madison’s first goal came off a penalty corner as the initial strike was saved by Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) but JMU’s Dana Weaver was there for the rebound and subsequent goal. Nine minutes later Madison’s Veerle Goudswaard took the ball into the circle and scored, giving the Dukes a lead they would not relinquish. JMU almost scored again, but Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) blocked a shot at the post. The Dukes took the 2-1 lead into the break.
Fourteen minutes into the second half JMU’s Janelle Perlis drove the ball into the D and fired off a shot that snuck into the far boards for a 3-1 lead that would stand as the final score.
White made 10 saves in the game, her third consecutive game with 10 or more saves.
The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 18 as they take on their third in-state opponent in at row at Richmond. Game time against the Spiders is 5:00 pm.
