FRANKLIN, Tenn. – In its first competition of the year, the University of Virginia men’s golf team finished ninth at the Mason Rudolph Collegiate on Tuesday.

Host Vanderbilt shot an astonishing 29-under 811 to lead the field of 11 teams. The College of Charleston finished second with an 11-under 829, while Alabama was third with a two-under (838). The Cavaliers moved up to ninth with a 868 (+28) after firing their best round (283) on the final day.

Individually, Vanderbilt’s Brandt Snedeker captured medalist honors with a 12-under 198. Charleston’s Adam Grodhaus followed by two strokes with a 200 (-10), while Vandy’s Craig Dunlap was third with a 202 (-8).

Competing in his first collegiate meet, UVa freshman Brad Tilley (Chappaqua, N.Y.) led the Cavaliers with 215 (+5) to tie for 28th place. Senior Thomas Lee (Guttenburg, N.J.) shot a career-low 69 in the final round to finish tied for 31st with a 216 (+6). Junior Jeremy Luce (Austin, Texas) followed with a 218 (+8) to tie for 35th. Senior Justin Goodhue (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot a 220 (+10), while freshman John Fizer (Trenton, N.J.) fired a 230.

Virginia continues fall play on Oct. 8-9 at the Adams Cup. Hosted by Rhode Island, the tourney will be played at the Newport (R.I.) Country Club.
