Cavaliers Fall to Richmond, 2-1
Sept. 18, 2002
The University of Virginia field hockey team rallied late, but it was not enough as the Cavaliers (4-2) fell to the Richmond Spiders 2-1 this afternoon in Richmond. The Spiders scored on a pair of direct short corners, with one coming in each half, to defeat the Hoos. Virginia’s Emily White (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) made 13 saves to help the Cavalier defense, the fourth consecutive game in which she has recorded ten or more saves. The Hoos got on the board on a corner shot of their own, as Kelli Hill (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) scored on a deflection of a straight shot.
The Spiders jumped on top early as Sarah Adams connected on a direct short corner shot just 4:47 i nto the game. That lead held up into halftime. In the 54th minute the Spiders drew another corner and Adams’ shot hit the right post and went in, giving the Spiders a 2-0 lead with 16 minutes remaining in regulation.
Five minutes later the Cavaliers stopped a Spider corner and broke out as Juli Bojanic (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made a tackle at the top of the circle and sent the ball upfield to Sara York (Watertown, Mass./Watertown). York sent a long ball up the side to Katie Slocum (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle Area), who took the ball into the circle and crossed it where the Cavaliers drew a corner. On the corner, Cara Unterfkofler (Centreville, Va./Centreville) inserted the ball to Emily Beach (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase). Beach stopped the ball for Hill, whose shot glanced off a defender into the back of the Spiders’ net, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
With the loss, the Cavaliers fall to 4-2 overall. They return to action on Sunday as they travel to North Carolina to take on ACC rival UNC.
