CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team opened play at the first annual UVa Invitational with a strong performance during day one. The Cavaliers had seven players advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round in singles and had one doubles team advance to the quarterfinals.

In Flight A, the Cavaliers had success as all three players in that draw won two matches on the day to advance to the quarterfinals. Fourth year Michael Duquette, second year Chris Gonyer, and first year Rylan Rizza will all be in quarterfinal action Saturday in the top draw. That draw saw three of the five seeded players fall in the first round.

In Flight B, three first years, Darrin Cohen, Nick Meythaler, and Stephen Rozek each won two matches on the day to advance to the quarterfinals. In Flight C, first year Travis Triplett advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins.

In doubles action, the team of Duquette and Stephen Nolen advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight A with a first round win. Kyle Hatten and Rozek advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight B with their first round win.

The three-day event at the Snyder Tennis Center will continue on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. as the three flights of singles and doubles begin play in the quarterfinals. The tournament features players from 14 schools.
